Shanghai & Family History

From an old photograph into a century of family life.

The lives of Sonia Hu’s grandmother and mother offer a starting point for exploring Shanghai family history. Marriage, education, migration and historical change become part of everyday life and the narrative of Shanghai Forever Lost.

A city’s past survives in family memories as well as streets and buildings. These works approach history through lived experience.
